Mr. Daniel Désir, a native of Haiti, is an accomplished and inspired dancer, choreographer. His research interests include culture and education. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. His journey through dance started in 1986 on the island of Haiti where he mastered Haitian traditional folk dances and learned to incorporate this style with contemporary and modern styles. He first studied with Mr. Péniel Guerrier and Ramsès Philius, and then took classes at the National Theater of Haiti. In 1987, he became a member of the Grand Ballet Folklorique Tamboula d’Haiti under the artistic direction of Mr. Hervé Maxi. His passion and love for this art took him to the National School of Arts (ENARTS), where he met Mrs. Eileen H. Bazin who gave him a scholarship to her dance school: the Haitian American Academy of Ballet and Arts. Later, Mr. Désir became a member of the Haitian American Contemporary Dance Theatre. Trained in numerous dance disciplines: ballet, jazz, tap, modern (Horton, Limon-Humphrey, Graham), Haitian folk, African, Dunham Technique and Latin dances, his talent developed so quickly that by 1990, he was Assistant Director Artistic of GBF Tamboula d’Haiti, and assumed the role of Artistic Director three years later. In 1993, he was invited to join the Alixanon’s Dance Company for their annual performance. During 1993-1994, he was a guest artist at the Lynn Williams Rouzier Academy of Dance for their annual school performance. Mr. Désir has also worked as instructor and choreographer for the Ballet Folklorique d’Haiti (BFH) under the direction of Nicole Lumarque. He opened a ballroom dancing club “Dane Latino” in 1995 and was the director, instructor for this institution. Following this accomplishment, in 1998-1999, Mr. Désir received a scholarship from the Cecchetti Council of America to attend their summer dance camp at Hope College, Holland Michigan.

In 1999, Mr. Désir migrated to the United Stated and was a seasonal choreographer for the Harambee Dance Ensemble at Barry University in Miami Shores, FL. And also for Ayizan Kréyòl, a Haitian dance troop in Miami FL. Mr. Désir arrived in Chicago Illinois in the year 2000, with a traditional Haitian band called “Asakivle” with whom he has performed and taught at many Chicagoland elementary schools and high schools. This Same year, he met with Mr. Alfred Baker, the artistic director of the West Indian Folk Dance Company, one of Chicago’s most talented and vibrant dance companies where he has taught Afro-Haitian and Dunham Technique. This company inspired him to take up permanent residence in Chicago. He has since taught many workshops and has done choreography for the Najwa Dance Corp. Mr. Désir has also landed a job with the Hedwig Dances, teaching Afro-Haitian contemporary dance at the Chicago Cultural Center. Currently, Mr. Desir teaches Latin dances at Triton College located in River Grove, Illinois since the year 2000.

Mr. Desir truly emerging as a star in the Chicago Dance community. He consider dance as “a gift of God and it must be executed to honor whom who have created it. This fusion of the body and soul allows me to attain my mental and moral stability through discipline and also to develop my sense of the expression of beauty and creativity. For me dancing is not only a way to entertain the audience or a way to help them escaping their constraints and disappointments, but to help them understand the universal events of life.” In the year 2001, Mr. Désir founded his own dance company, the “Tamboula Ethnic Dance Corp”. His works are an unpredictable fusion of ethnic dance disciplines, modern and contemporary blended with traditional Haitian folk dances and rhythms, accentuated by religious symbolism. This unique form of dance mesmerizes dance professionals and audiences alike. Mr. Désir’s desire is to create a body language that outpours an expression of the sentiments of human life in this confusing world.
